Name Karl Brown
About Throughout my five years involvement in radio I have been committed to producing high quality programmes aimed at entertaining and informing the audience. In my involvement in student radio, which covered the whole of my five year university life, I have taken an active role in as many areas of station work as was possible. I have been involved in equipment maintenance and repair; programme production; organised and participated in planning meetings and developing the play-list system to ensure we always had an up-to-date musical output for our daytime shows. I also dealt with the press, promotion companies and record labels on a regular basis to secure the best deal for Livewire1350. I produced advertisements and promos for shows, especially for my own specialist music show (Musical Knick Knacks) which ran for four years on Livewire1350. I interviewed celebrities and other people for inclusion in station output. In addition to this I was regularly called on at short notice to provide emergency programme cover on a wide range of shows and to promote the station as a DJ on Livewire 1350 parties and club-nights as well as charity nights and special events. I also hosted a live weekly lunch-time topical news debate featuring students from the three main political parties. On top of all this, I collected the post and ensured it was dealt with promptly.

Whilst on work experience at BBC Radio Nottingham (March/April 2008) I was involved in Breakfast Show production meetings discussing ideas for the output. Following the meetings, I was responsible for placing phone-calls to arrange and conduct interviews; gain new material to find new angles for the presenter and writing cues. I interviewed many of the Nottinghamshire MPs including Kenneth Clarke; Alan Simpson, John Hepple and Paddy Tipping regarding a campaign we were running to gain support and recognition for Bomber Commands efforts in World War II. I also traced and spoke to the grandson of Bomber Harris and Harris daughter and although neither were prepared to talk on air they did provide valuable assistance in developing the campaign.

During my work experience at both BBC Radio Nottingham and BBC Radio Norfolk I put together a number of packages for broadcast on a diverse range of topics ranging from the plight of British pig farmers (complete with sound effects) and possible changes to the UK Driving Test, to a group of Norfolk school children attending concert for Nelson Mandela and a package on a local art school exhibition,

My work experience at the BBC also involved writing copy, voice-pieces, and producing cue-&-clips for the hourly bulletins. This built on skills I learnt as part of News-Days on my Radio Journalism course at Nottingham Trent University where I gained experience as a news editor and as a reporter regularly feeding the desk with copy lines on my story and providing other copy or voice pieces as required by the team.

I am experienced in using Adobe Audition, Radioman and Audacity sound editing packages, which I have used to produce both news and music-based material for a variety of programmes.

I enjoy working on my own or as a member of a team and prefer to keep busy, which was one of my reasons for becoming so active in Livewire1350 and for getting involved in Fly FM. I am most happy when the output is professional and of a high quality and feel a sense of achievement when a piece or programme goes well. I also realise that the next output needs to be better in order to continue to develop and improve. I am a quick learner who responds well to positive feedback, I also try to encourage colleagues and provide constructive feedback, recognising the damage that negative and undue criticism can cause.

I know there is always more to learn in radio- a different angle on a story or a better turn of phrase or link and I am always looking to improve my performance and encourage others whilst enjoying myself and producing a high quality product.
